2017 mazda 3 for sale renton washingtonMazda’s apparently exploring other optional uses for its car engines, including using them as backup generators. Its EV-plus-rotary-range-extender protype, which should be available by 2020, the engine is used to generate electricity for the EV powertrain. But Ichiro Hirose, Mazda’s powertrain development managing executive recently told Autoblog that the company is also looking at the engine’s ability to act as a mobile emergency generator to power tools or provide power to buildings.

The Japanese automaker is seen as an engine technology market leader due to its new Skyactiv-X powertrain, a new gasoline compression ignition that doesn’t require spark plugs and performs like diesel. The Skyactiv-X is expected to work with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well to produce more torque, waste less heat, and increase fuel efficiency.

Here’s a more detailed explanation of how the Skyactiv-X powertrain works:

“Essentially, more power is produced over a shorter period of time each time, because compression ignition is much more violent than simply lighting an air-fuel mixture. Mazda research and development engineer Jay Chen likens it to popping an inflated balloon instead of simply letting the air out through the neck.”

Due to reach the U.S. in late 2019, it may be the active ingredient in a next-generation Mazda 3.

In the meantime, hurry in to Sound Ford near Kent, Washington, and test drive a preowned 2017 Mazda 3. It has only 40,869 miles to its name, making it a fantastic value.
