Used Fusion, Fusion Hybrid & Fusion Energi Seattle History
Compromise is the cornerstone of the Ford Fusion. Introduced in 2005, this mid-size option served as the perfect middle ground between the compact and pick-up markets, providing drivers with a sophisticated sedan.
The Fusion - during its first generation run from 2005 to 2012 - was branded the new face of Ford. Critics admired its sleek lines and modern comforts, deeming it a worthy successor to the much beloved Taurus. The car also proved popular with consumers, selling over 140,000 units during its second year and revving past its nearest competitors (the Camry and the Malibu).

The defining moment of the Fusion’s history, however, came in 2010. Ford - wishing to integrate hybrid technology into its lineup - created a gas-electric option, transitioning the engine from Duratec to EcoBoost. This struck a chord with consumers (an in-flux economy was wreaking havoc on pump prices and budgets were tightly constrained) and the model soon spawned four variants: the S, SE, Titanium and Energi.
Since that time the Fusion has ranked among the global charts, pushing the boundaries of plug-in power and fuel economy.
Notable Features
The Fusion, despite arriving in just 2005, has become a signature Ford model - and a quick glance at some of its most notable features shows why:
AWD: the inclusion of AWD in the Fusion surprised many (few mid-sized options had it, with a FWD powertrain proving most common). This allowed the car to adapt to different environments and ensured broader consumer appeal.
Sport-Tuned Suspension: emphasizing the Fusion’s precise mechanics, the sport-tuned suspension delivered a rally-inspired performance.
Lithium-Ion Batteries: while the original Fusion boasted hydride batteries, Ford soon upgraded its engine with lithium-ion options. These provided best-in-class economy and established the sedan as a true hybrid.
The Fusion is - and will always be - an undeniable force for Ford.
Awards
Throughout the years the Fusion has earned Ford much recognition, with critics and drivers alike praising its efficient (and effective) design:
J. D. Power and Associates’ Most Appealing Mid-Size Car: 2006
U.S. News and World Report’s Best Car on the Thrifty 50: 2008
Motor Trend's Car of the Year: 2010
Car and Driver Top 10 Award: 2010
Automotive Fleet’s Car of the Year: 2014
The Ford Fusion began as a compromise - but became so much more.
