2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Nabs Popular Science Award

Adding to its growing collection of awards, Ford's Mustang Shelby GT350R recently scooped up Popular Science's 2016 Best of What's New Award in the auto division.

The competition was stiff in this year's competition - Popular Science's annual presentation of accolades accounts for reviews of thousands of new products and innovations. Only 100 winners across 10 categories walk (or in this case, drive) away with awards in hand, as well as a secured spot in Popular Science's Best of What's New issue. The fundamental criteria? The product or technology in question must represent a notable step forward in its section.

In the case of the Shelby GT350R, its ultralight carbon-fiber wheels sealed the deal. On the GT350R, its front two wheels rely on a ceramic thermal barrier coating for insulation, a technology borrowed from a similar method NASA used on a space shuttle. Compared to equivalently sized, standard aluminum wheels, each 19-inch carbon-fiber wheel weighs approximately 15 pounds less, which improves the GT350R's handling and acceleration. Not surprisingly, the wheels are the first of their kind on a production car, setting them apart and putting the GT350R on the award pedestal. Check out the GT350R in action in the video below:

"The Best of What’s New awards honor innovations that shape the future,” Kevin Gray, Popular Science's executive editor, said. “From life-saving technology to incredible space engineering to gadgets that are just breathtakingly cool, this is the best of what’s new.” See Ford's lineup of Mustangs for yourself at Sound Ford Washington today!
Ford Mustang GT Seattle WashingtonGetting behind the wheel, revving a hoss of an engine, taking to the open road and streamlining her curves – it’s the beauty of driving a high quality performance vehicle. The demand for these high-octane experiences continues to grow across the globe, and Ford Motor Company is counting itself among the growing favorite brands among younger, more affluent car buyers.

Thinking of buying a 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 or a 2017 Ford 350R Mustang? You’ll have to think of another plan or hold off until the 2018 models release, because Ford has already sold out of the 2017 model year for both. Good thing Ford Focus RS is now available globally for the first time ever. Oh, wait, no… the 2017 model is also sold out – everywhere.

Don’t fret, though. There are still plenty of stylish, full-caliber Ford performance vehicles available. Previous model years are nothing to sneeze at, undoubtedly. The Ford Mustang was the world’s best selling sports coupe in 2015. And, exciting news, the brand-new Ford F-150 Raptor will arrive in the U.S. during the fourth quarter of 2017, followed by a first-time-ever release to China. The Ford GT will release late in 2016 and more than 6,500 consumers have already applied to own the first 500 cars.

“Ford’s commitment to performance leadership continues, with Ford on track to deliver 12 new performance vehicles promised by the end of the decade,” says Dave Pericak, global director for Ford Performance.

Moral of the story: Ford Motor Company is making a huge impact on the performance vehicle market and, if you want to be a part of it, you’d better submit your application for the 2018 models now!
