Ford Employee Innovation: Carr-E

Ford Innovation Helps CommutersUrban commuters know the long, tedious drill of getting to their destination. Take the number four bus to stop 23, walk five blocks to the L-train, which you ride for 20 minutes and then have to truck it another seven blocks to the office. It’s not ideal, but it’s reality for many city dwellers.

Enter Ford systems engineer, Kilian Vas, from Germany, answered the call from Ford Motor Company for innovations that would help ease the commute process. With the help of his colleagues Daniel Hari and Dr. Uwe Wagner, Vas invented Carr-E – a portable electronic pedestrian assistant with four wheels.

“I was inspired by Ford’s expansion into both an auto and mobility company, as well as our founder Henry Ford’s dedication to transforming transportation,” Vas says.

Carr-E  can carry a person or even a heavy object that might make your arms go numb if you had to carry it yourself for seven blocks. All you have to do is carry an electronic transmitter and Carr-E will follow you like a stray puppy.

Better yet, noticing that the wheel-well of his car had some unused space, Vas designed Carr-E to fit, allowing commuters to easily store the device until parked (or carry it without much hassle) and embarking upon the final leg of their journey.
