We just purchased a new F350 from Key West Ford, I’ve bought a lot of vehicles in the past and they were by far the best dealership I’ve dealt with. Our salesman Pete Olson went out of his way to make the experience hassle free. Can’t say enough. Thanks Pete, Wes, Gurj and Kelvin. Job well done.

An epidemic is developing of pedestrians glued to their smartphones and not paying attention to oncoming traffic. Coined “petextrians,” these distracted walkers put themselves in danger by looking at their phones rather than watching as they cross streets, etc. Rather than attempt to change the behavior of the masses, Ford is taking a more adaptive approach and utilizing technology of the future.

The Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection utilizes a radar and camera, scanning the roadway for obstacles that may cause an accident. Upon first detection, the vehicle will visually and audibly warn the driver and automatically mute the stereo. Failure to respond will free the vehicle up to automatically use the brakes to either prevent or reduce the impeding impact, as the Ford Media Center explains in a press release.

Check out this video to see the Pedestrian Detection in action:

The camera is mounted to the windshield and uses a unique Ford algorithm to calculate the risk of impact and determine what type of object may be there. Right now the technology is limited to clear driving conditions in daylight at up to 50 mph. Over the span of 473 days, Ford tested the technology on 12 different vehicle models in the U.S., Europe and China. During that time frame, the U.S. tests recorded over three million objects, vehicles and pedestrians that could risk impact.

The technology will make its official appearance in the 2017 Ford Fusion with a North America release. In the meantime, check out the vehicles offered at Sound Ford with a number of upgraded technologies to make you safer on the road.
