Along with 121 other women, Kristina Schermer is using her role as a breast cancer survivor – and Ford Model of Courage -  to help and encourage women facing similar circumstances. The 28-year-old recently shared with Woman's Day magazine that although she was aware that breast cancer ran in her family, she still wasn't prepared for the moment her doctor called with a crushing diagnosis in September 2014: not only did she have cancer in her left breast, her other breast was essentially "a time bomb waiting to go off." With a wave of love and support from family and friends to carry her through the darker hours, Kristina decided to have a double mastectomy only a month after her doctor's news turned her life upside down. To preserve the opportunity to bear children in the future, she also went through an egg retrieval process before starting chemotherapy.

Although the two years since her diagnosis have been punctuated with peaks and valleys, Kristina shared that she is grateful for the lessons that she's learned as a result of her cancer. "I've learned to really embrace where I am each day, and what I'm dealing with, and trust that just because things are ugly or hard sometimes, it doesn't mean they're not good. Because of my journey, I've learned to give more—to myself and to others," she said. Now cancer-free, she hopes to inspire and provide consolation for other women through her experience.
