Ford and BlackBerry Join Forces for the Future of Driving

In anticipation of its autonomous fleet, which is expected to roll out in the next five years, Ford recently announced a 'berry' sweet partnership that is sure to appeal to drivers. In conjunction with BlackBerry, Ford intends to develop a highly intelligent and secure system to propel the new generation of cars, one that is poised to accommodate the needs of the future. Leaders of both companies are aligned on the belief that connected car technology is the way of the future - watch Ford's CEO, Mark Fields, speak to the company's plans in the video below:


The partnership stemmed from the realization that developing equipment and technology in-house requires skill and manual labor, both of which can be more efficiently procured from external sources. By working together, the development process is streamlined and built upon an existing relationship -- as Reese Counts reports for Autoblog.com,  "This isn't the first partnership between the two companies. BlackBerry's QNX operating system currently powers Ford's latest infotainment system, Sync 3, among many others in the industry."  For this revolutionary collaboration, BlackBerry has stated its dedication of a team of engineers, which will work to broaden the reach of QNX and BlackBerry's Certicom security technology.

In addition to its fleet of the future, Ford also aims to have a consumer product ready to present by 2025. Given BlackBerry's publicly stated shift from the handset business to the software business moving forward, as well as its status in the autonomous tech world, the move to partner with Ford is a clear step in the right direction. After all, autonomous cars are slated to redefine the meaning of the term 'mobile device.'
