If you’re a Seattle commuter who lives in a public transportation desert or is tired of sitting behind the wheel in gridlock traffic, we have good news for you. Chariot, the on-demand shuttle startup owned by Ford, is bringing its app-based crowdsourced transit service to the congested streets of Seattle.

Crowd-sourced information is gathered through the Chariot app. As people share their desired pickup points, an algorithm will create routes for where the service is most needed.

The shuttle is none other than North America’s best selling van the Ford Transit. This full-size passenger wagon can comfortably fit 14 people. Assuming each of these commuters would alternatively be driving their own car, this vehicle now brings the carbon footprint of over a dozen exhaust pipes down to one.

John Kwant, the vice president of Ford’s city project, calls Chariot a “fast, reliable, and affordable transportation alternative”. At only $4 per ride, this system is significantly cheaper than options like Lyft and Uber. At the moment, Chariot is only available for employees of participating Seattle businesses, but Ford plans to make the service city-wide soon.
