2017 Ford Mustang 5.0 Fastback Surprises, Impresses at U.K. MPG Marathon

The 2017 Ford Mustang 5.0 Fastback may be a stallion on the streets, but it doesn't horse around. In a surprising turn of events across the pond at this year's MPG Marathon, which took place on October 18 and 19, the Mustang came out on top with the Best Percent Improvement Award. The award, in particular, compares cars' recorded Marathon gas mileage to their officially rated fuel economy.

Not only did the 5.0 Fastback beat out other contenders from other automakers, it outdid a competitor from its own family - the 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder model that many would have guessed to take first prize. Despite the inherently eco-friendly nature that the Ecoboost's name implies,  the Fastback, which sports a 5.0-liter V-8, stole the show with its average of 36.6 mpg Imperial (which translates to 30.5 mpg U.S.) across a course that stretched 430 miles long.

The Fastback's high numbers, especially given that the course winded through public roads, made the unexpected contender a clear winner at the Marathon. As stated by Stephen Edelstein of GreenCarReports.com, "The Mustang's performance was 75 percent higher than its official rating of 20.9 mpg Imperial (17.4 mpg U.S.) on the European testing cycle. That result beats the previous record for fuel-economy improvement on the MPG Marathon, a 39-percent increase achieved by drivers of a Ford Fiesta ST subcompact in 2014." The effects of Ford's victory in the UK are already showing. For the first time, Ford's U.K. division is importing right-hand drive versions of the Mustang in notably large shipments. The increased numbers also reflect U.K. drivers' penchant for V-8 models - although many Americans would balk at the price of gas in the U.S. compared to the States, Ford reported that two-thirds of current-generation Mustangs sold in the U.K. are V-8 models.

Luckily, you don't have to book a flight to the U.K. to take the Mustang to the road. Swing by Sound Ford in Renton, Washington and take one of our models
