It seems a puzzling combination - a super-sized family-hauler and a turbocharged speedster. Each embraces a different market, targeting unique demographics and niche sales charts. Their commonalities seem elusive.
Soon, however, Ford will bridge the gap between comfort and performance - delivering a new ST version of its beloved Explorer.
According to Motor Authority, Ford has just confirmed the arrival of an Explorer ST. This platform (which will anchor the brand’s 2020 fleet) will serve as a replacement for the current Sport trim, emphasizing improved capability. Though concrete specs remain scarce, critics anticipate that a twin-turbocharged V6 - similar to the 2018 Edge - will propel this platform. Power ratios are expected to exceed 400 HP, while an all-wheel-drivetrain will ensure maximum off-road adaptability. A 10-speed automatic transmission should also be integrated into the chassis, delivering nimble gear ratios with every mile.
Another intriguing possibility is that the 2020 Explorer ST will feature an optional hybrid powertrain. Ford will soon increase its EV production (having recently invested more than $4 billion into advanced assembly lines and lithium-ion research), and the Motor Authority team believes that this platform could prove the perfect introduction to next-gen electrification.
