No job is too big for the 2017 Ford Super Duty, a truck capable of handling jobs ranging from forestry to manufacturing and beyond. Although the standard Super Duty is more than sufficient for most towing needs, Ford also offers the opportunity for truck enthusiasts to customize pickups and chassis cabs; this special option guarantees that there is a Ford-friendly solution for every hauling or towing demand. In efforts to validate this claim, the Blue Oval recently let a handful of real-world truck drivers put it to the test, designing their idealized pickups and chassis cabs with all the configurations, engines, smart technology features and more.
Stacey Nelson, a senior fleet manager at Black Hills Energy in South Dakota, was one of the lucky drivers. For her driving needs - she oversees a fleet of 3,200 trucks - durability and value were key components she considered when building her dream Ford F-250 Super Duty. She selected the roomy SuperCab model with 4x4 and added extra features to emphasize comfort in challenging terrain and environmental conditions, such as a medium-duty battery and a rear wheel well liner.
“The weight Ford saved and reinvested into strengthening the Super Duty frame should result in a truck that lasts longer and is more durable,” Nelson said in a statement released by Ford. “A more durable truck translates into lower costs for us – which we can pass on to our customers.”
For Jack Mills, the owner of Pum Contracting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he wanted a truck with heavy hauling capacity that could still maneuver well. Due to the range of projects he manages, such as building bridges and culverts, moving large loads efficiently is essential.
“My trucks are always loaded to capacity with the crew, their tools and equipment for any situation that might develop at a job site that could be as far as 300 miles from home base,” Mills shared in the same release. “Plus, they always are towing a trailer or piece of equipment.” To make his vision a reality, Mills picked a F-350 XL work truck with 4,340 pounds of payload capacity and a towing capacity of 18,000 pounds. The latter number confirms the Ford Super Duty as the top choice among fleets in the heavy-duty construction industry, given its market share of 48 percent.
And over in Rochester, New York, Tim Pope crafted a F-350 Super Duty that is fully equipped to serve the needs of Terry Tree Service, of which he is the CEO. The truck notably features factory-installed amber LED warning strobe lights for the fleet, which serves the residential tree care, commercial land clearing, storm disaster reclamation and wood resource recovery projects that Pope oversees.
“We need the 11,400-pound GVWR rating to transport tools and equipment for our job sites, and we chose the transfer case and fuel tank skid plates for our off-road, right-of-way work,” Pope says in the same release. Thanks to the variety of features that Ford offers for its Super Duty trucks and beyond, it's no wonder that Ford Super Duty is the top pickup choice among fleets in the forestry industry.
