All-new SmartDeviceLink will support drivers of Ford sedans and more.Together with Toyota Motor Company, Ford representatives recently announced the two automakers' collaboration to form SmartDeviceLink Consortium, which will serve to provide customers with a wider range of choices in how they connect and manage smartphone apps while driving. To bring the idea to fruition, the nonprofit consortium will utilize an open source software platform.

Primarily, the SmartDeviceLink gives customers seamless access to apps on their smartphones via in-vehicle displays and voice-activated commands - so whether you're navigating busy streets in your Ford Fiesta or towing heavy with your F-350, you'll still be able to safely call upon apps with ease.

“Encouraging innovation is at the center of Ford’s decision to create SmartDeviceLink, and this consortium is a major step toward that goal,” Doug VanDagens, the global director of Ford Connected Vehicle and Services, and a board member of the consortium, recently said.

Smartphone app developers are sure to revel in the benefits of the SmartDeviceLink, which allows them to effortlessly blend their app functions with in-vehicle technology like voice recognition and steering wheel controls.
